The Gold Coast Sport Fishing Club ran a successful “Top Gun Shootout” event on Sunday the 14th of August as a per-cursor to the prestigious annual Flathead Classic.

The Top Gun Shootout has grown every year and has become a feature in its own right. This year 35 teams entered to compete for a chance to win a share in the $10000 prize pool, and perhaps more importantly, take the opportunity to get in the zone and practice in competition conditions for the upcoming Flathead Classic!

Craig Templar joined forces with partner Sue Belmont to fish under the Austackle banner. Craig has a technique he’s been perfecting using the Austackle Shimmer Stik and sure enough, the practice paid off with Craig landing the biggest fish of the day (courtesy of classy netting from Sue) at a whopping 87cm!! Sue also landed the biggest Flattie caught by a female, using the same Shimmer Stik technique. They were only one fish away from a finish at the pointy end, finishing a respectable 18th for 4 fish. We can’t wait to hear more about it. Craig fished with Masterclass 1-3kg rod, M2500 reel spooled with 4lb Krypto braid and 6lb Krypto Fluorocarbon leader.

Team Austackle 2 consisting of Brett Horner and daughter Jaimee, plus Trent Hopkins fished strongly to finish in 4th place, taking home $1070 in prize money – not a pad payout for a day on the water! Jaimee struck again with the Biggest Flathead caught by a junior at 64cm.
Most of the fish came by trolling an Austackle prototype lure… watch this space for more details!

Well done to all involved in running the event, and to those who took part. We look forward to the Classic!
